COLLATERAL PROJECTS | PRINT
Studio H, 1973-Present

Sketches for a curriculum program book
Hand-drawn sketches like the one above were a standard approach to design explorations and presentations in the pre-computer era. Although less precise than later computer renderings, they were often very evocative as drawings.

The Essex Institute
Series of museum books

”Windows on the Past” is one in a series of books Studio H designed for the Essex Institute, a literary, historical, and scientific society located in Salem, Massachusetts. Between 1848–1992, the institute maintained a museum, library, historic houses; arranged educational programs; and issued scholarly publications. In1992, the institute merged with the Peabody Museum of Salem to form the acclaimed Peabody Essex Museum.

For these museum book projects, we collaborated with the great art historian Anne Farnam (1940-1991), who served as Curator at the Institute (1975-1983) and as its President (1984-1991).

Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities
Annual Report and many other collateral materials

The image above is the cover of one of the Council’s annual reports
. For this and related print projects, Studio H collaborated with senior leadership to develop approaches for materials including reports, brochures, announcements, and invitations. The resulting works, which were well received by the arts, literary, philanthropic, and legislative communities, heightened awareness of the goals and remarkable, positive impacts of the Council’s mission.

For this outreach campaign, we developed concepts and materials, including brochures, a newsletter, and posters. In addition to the continuing education work, Studio H developed a wide range of small books for Wellesley College, as well as the Alumni Magazine, between 1975-1980.
